The Ideal Muslimah: A Comprehensive Guide for Muslim Women (Book Review)

During my academic break, while organizing my bookshelf, I felt like reading a book. That’s when I came across a beautiful, attractive hardcover book gifted by my mother. It caught my attention, so I picked it up and started reading that later became truly fascinating to me.

In a world where identities are constantly being shaped by the trends and social expectations and westernization has become common, many women tend to search for clear and authentic guidance that would help  lead a life devoted to the obedience of Allah.

 "The Ideal Muslimah" by Muhammad Ali al Hashimi is one amongst the collective comprehensive guides for a muslimah to understand the way of living according to the faith. This book gives a beautiful portrait of the true Islamic Personality of the Muslim woman as defined in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Dr. Al Hashimi presents his vision that is formed by the guidelines of divine principles which are based on noble values that are governed by the most perfect, comprehensive and precise law.

According to the Quran, faith (Iman) is not merely verbal affirmation but a sincere conviction in the heart, confirmed by tongue, and enacted through righteous deeds. It is very difficult for a Muslim woman to lead a happy and contented life without the unwavering faith and its correct application in her day to day life.

Women play a fundamental role in shaping and forming a society. The saying "Women are the first school for their children" highlights a woman's love, guidance and influence on the development and upbringing of a child and thereby a prosperous nation.

As said by the author himself “ The Muslim woman is in fact raising a heroic new generation, playing an important role in da'wah and making an important, constructive contribution in all areas of life, working side-by-side with men to populate and cultivate the earth, enrich life and make people happy.”

Accordingly, This book offers the readers a comprehensive and holistic approach of a woman's place in Islam. It gives an overview of the many roles which a woman plays throughout her life - as a daughter, a wife, a mother, a friend in an elegant manner.

As a matter of fact, the heart of the book, the first chapter addressed by the author is about the Ideal Muslimah's relationship with her lord. Here, the author emphasizes the fundamental and the most important aspect of our life first i.e faith. This clearly reminds us that if this supreme pillar of our life - Aqeeda and worship is sound and genuine then other things will automatically begin to fall into its place, In shaa Allah.

Thereafter, the author mentions about the Ideal Muslimah's relationship with herself - body, mind and soul, her relationship with her parents, family, relatives, friends, neighbours and society as a whole. Considering women to have a strong role and portraying as a person with valid contribution in every level of a community life. This book highlights the importance of a balanced life by addressing one's physical, Mental and spiritual needs that are always guided by the wise teachings of Islam as seen in the Quran, the Sunnah and examples of righteous people.

Extracts from historical events and Hadiths have been mentioned in a remarkable manner that showcases and brings a vivid picture of how early muslimah at the time of Prophet (SAW) practiced Islam, strived in the cause of Allah and served as a role model for the modern world women whose examples can be put forth and followed by muslimah of all places and all times.

Moreover, the latter part of the book puts forward the very essential characteristics of a person of high moral integrity and righteousness such as Honesty & Sincerity; Kindness & Compassion; Modesty and self-respect; Justice & Generosity etc., which outlines the traits and conduct of an ideal Muslimah based on Islamic teachings.

Furthermore, duties and responsibilities of a Muslimah as a Da'ee (Caller to Islam), her mission, active and social role of a Muslimah in her community is emphasized. The author highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and thereby spreading Islam by words as well as action.

This shows that this book is presented as a practical book that addresses challenges faced by women and realistic ways to face those hurdles that come along the way.  The book reminds readers that traditional Islamic sources already recognize women as full partners in human history.

Hence this book became one of my favourite books as reading this book not just increases knowledge but also shapes the mindset, character and daily living according to Islam.

• Helps build a strong connection with Allah as it constantly reminds the reader of their purpose in life.

• Builds Islamic Character and guides in improving family roles.

• Helps in developing social conduct and communicational skills

• Gives a clarity about who an ideal Muslimah is and helps evaluate oneself with regards to the limits set by Islam.
