Her worth comes not from a piece of cloth on her head,
but from what is within instead.
Covered. Comfortable. Confident.
These words sum up how our hijab makes us feel. For a large number of Muslim women, wearing a headscarf is a part of their identity. It is an act of worship as it has been ordained to them by the Almighty. It is not forced upon them, rather it is a personal choice made by many. It does not limit their dreams and ambitions. The hijab in no way oppresses women from getting an education, working and exploring. It is agreeable that wearing the hijab differentiates them from others in appearance, however, in a broader sense, we are all just the same and we all deserve equal opportunities.
This inspired Girls Islamic Organization, Chennai, to launch a 10-day campaign, from 21st March to 30th March 2022, to bring to light the significance of wearing a hijab as well as to address the misconceptions attached to it.
Through this campaign, we aim to dismantle the common prejudice that the hijab is oppressive and it limits our way of living. For this purpose, we have planned to conduct a panel discussion with Muslim and non-Muslim women alike to discuss their views on the topic. Apart from this, those who have doubts about the hijab can clarify them by calling at +91 8148208728 or sending in their query to our email ID, giochtn@gmail.com. We are also circulating posters and videos everyday to help change people's perception of hijab. Pamphlets and books talking about the true essence of hijab are going to be circulated in various areas around Chennai with the aim of educating people on the matter. "Try out hijab" stalls are going to be put up around a few public areas around the city so that others can try out a hijab and see how it feels. They can also ask questions or give their opinions on the matter. Through these means, we want to reach out to as many people as possible. We want to pass on the message of peace and harmony that our religion teaches us and show people that there is more to us than a mere piece of clothing on our heads.
