DISTRACTION AND DISCONNECTION: HOW MODERN LIFE DISTANCES US FROM FITRAH

When was the last time we sat in silence without reaching for our phones?

In today’s fast moving world of notifications, trends and endless comparisons, the voice of fitrah has never reached our ears. Though we are surrounded with advanced technology, our soul and mind still requires peace, truth and submission to Allah.

Fitrah is the pure and natural state upon which every human being is created. It is a state that is inclined towards the truth, belief and the recognition of oneness of the Almighty. The Prophet Muhammed himself taught that every child is born upon fitrah, which is that the belief and submission to Allah is a part of our nature and it is not something that is imposed.

COMMON DISTRACTIONS AFFECTING YOUNG MUSLIMS:

In today’s world, the most common distraction that young muslims face is the internet, hopping onto the trends influenced by the western culture, constant academic pressure and career achievements makes them forget the purpose of their life. Living in a society which judges you by your success and not character and closeness to Allah, the priorities slowly shift.

Salah becomes rushed, Qur’an recitation becomes irregular and reflections become rare. Without even realizing, the heart becomes distant from the peace and calmness that Fitrah naturally seeks.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND CONSTANT COMPARISON:

As mentioned, social media is one of the greatest distractions. While it can be beneficial, it often tends the young minds to compare themselves. Watching all the carefully curated images of ‘perfect’ life, young muslims may start to measure their worth by likes, followers or others' opinions.

Comparison creates dissatisfaction in oneself. It breeds envy and emotions that ruin the purity of the young hearts. The Qur’an constantly reminds us not to look at what others have been given. True honor comes from taqwa and not from what we show to the world.

LOSS OF SILENCE AND REFELECTION:

Another major loss in the modern world is silence. Our ancestors used to take their own time to reflect and recollect their thoughts in silence. Today, even a bit of quietness feels uncomfortable. People fill every ounce of silence with sound. For instance, music, videos or podcasts.

Reflection is crucial for spiritual growth. Without silence, there is no deep reflection and without reflection, the heart hardens. Fitrah thrives in stillness because it is in those silent moments, we recognize our submission to Allah and the temporary dopamine of the world.

QUR’ANIC SOLUTIONS TO REGAIN FOCUS:

The Qur'an offers timeless solutions to modern distractions. It reminds us of remembrance. Allah says in the Qur’an that

أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

“Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.”

[Surah Ar-Raʿd 13:28]

Regular dhikrs calm our soul and clear our mind. It also reminds us of moderation. Islam does not oppose worldly life but warns against dwelling into it.

CREATING INTENTIONAL ROUTINES IN RAMADAN:

Ramadan is an excellent opportunity to reset our lives. It disconnects us from the worldly affairs and serves as a way to reconnect us to the original purpose of life. One can begin by taking their time to perform salah slowly and remembering it as a conversation between them and their creator.

Replacing device time with dhikr, dua or reading the history of prophets restores the balance. Most importantly, setting sincere intentions transforms ordinary actions into a form of worship.

IN SUMMARY:

In a world full of noise, pressure and distraction, returning to fitrah is not about escaping modern life but reminding us of our original purpose. As Allah says,

“So direct your face toward the religion- the Fitrah of Allah upon which he has created mankind” [ Surah Ar Rum: 30].

In that case, Ramadan gives us the opportunity to quiet the noise and rebuild our connection with our creator. It allows us to step away from worldly distractions and return to remembrance of Allah, The Almighty.

By choosing to live according to the Qur’an over mindless distractions makes us move closer to our true selves. In returning to Fitrah, we return to balance and sincerity and the peace that was always meant for us.
