The Musk Seller and the Blacksmith: A Lesson in Friendship

"Show me your friends, and I’ll tell you who you are", is a common saying which we’ve all heard about at least once in our life. But we do not realise how true that sentence is.

It's in general concise that humans are social creatures. We evolve alongside one another, so it becomes very clear that in order to move forward in life we need to have a form of relationship with each other. And one such important relationship is that of a friend.

Now, just like all that grows through the soil is not edible, all relationships are not beneficial to us, some people do us more good than others whereas some do more damage to us than others.

A good companion is someone who uplifts the other, both in deen and dunya. As humans we would not want anything more, than having a person who supports us.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith's bellows (or furnace); from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof."  (Sahih al-Bukhari 2101)

This hadith may seem simple at first, but it contains a very important lesson. The people we spend time with influence our thoughts, our habits, our values, our relationship with Allah, and even the person we eventually become.

Whether we realise it or not, the company we keep leaves their “fragrance” on us.

The Musk Seller: The Beauty of Good Company

Imagine walking past a shop that sells beautiful perfume. Even if you do not buy anything, the pleasant fragrance surrounds you. You leave the shop smelling better than when you entered. In any regard, being near the musk seller brings you some kind of benefit.

This is how a good friend can be.

A good friend does not need to be perfect. None of us are perfect. A righteous companion is someone who tries to do what is right and encourages you to do the same. When she makes a mistake, she is willing to learn. When you make a mistake, she advises you with kindness instead of pushing you further away from Allah.

That is the fragrance of good company. Like the musk seller, her presence leaves something beautiful behind, and having such a friend is a gift.

Friendship Is More Powerful Than We Think

Have you ever noticed how easily we begin to copy the people around us?

We may start using the same words as our friends. We may develop similar interests, follow the same trends, or begin to think the same way. Sometimes this influence is harmless. But sometimes we slowly begin doing things that we would never have chosen on our own.

A person may initially feel uncomfortable gossiping about another person. But if everyone around her constantly gossips, she may eventually join in. Someone may know that missing salah is wrong, but if her friends treat prayer as something unimportant, she may slowly become careless too. Another girl may feel uncomfortable with certain online content or conversations, but she may continue participating because she does not want to feel left out.

This is why the Prophet ﷺ used such a powerful example. Bad company does not always harm us immediately. Sometimes the harm is gradual.

One may not enter the blacksmith's workshop intending to get burned. Yet simply by being close to the fire, there is a risk that a spark will reach you. Even if you are not burned, you may leave with the unpleasant smell of smoke.

Similarly, we may think, “I am not doing what my friends are doing. I am only sitting with them.” But over time, their words, habits, attitudes, and choices can affect us.

Eventually, what once felt wrong may begin to feel normal. That is one of the greatest dangers of bad company: it can make us comfortable with things that should make us uncomfortable.

The Blacksmith's Bellows: When Friendship Pulls You Away from Allah

The Prophet ﷺ did not say that bad company might only affect you if you copy every bad thing your friends do. Even simply being around harmful influences can leave a trace upon a person.

The blacksmith's workshop is hot, smoky, and dangerous. Your clothes may be burned, your body may be harmed, or at the very least, the unpleasant smell may cling to you.

Similarly, a harmful friendship leaves marks on our hearts.

Sometimes bad friendship is more subtle, other times it can be more upfront and that kind of friendship can be deeply harmful.

A true friend should not make you feel ashamed of becoming closer to Allah.

A Good Friend Helps You Remember Who You Want to Be

Teenage years can be a very confusing period of life. One may still be discovering their personality, goals, values, and the kind of Muslimah one wants to become. During this time, the people around us can have a huge influence on your journey.

One should ask themselves: Who am I becoming because of the people I spend time with?

Do your friends bring out your kindness or your anger? Do they encourage you to study and work towards your goals, or do they constantly distract you? Do you feel closer to Allah after spending time with them, or further away?

A good friendship should help you become a better version of yourself.

This does not mean your friends must constantly talk about serious subjects. Islam does not teach us that friendship must be boring. You can laugh, share jokes, enjoy hobbies, and talk about your dreams. A righteous friend can be funny, creative, confident, and full of life.

The only difference is that she does not ask you to sacrifice your relationship with Allah in order to enjoy her company.

Now arises the question of: What About Friends Who Are Not Perfect?

It is important to remember that this hadith should not make us harsh or judgmental.

We should not look at our friends and decide that anyone who makes a mistake is automatically a “bad person.” Every human being sins. Every one of us has weaknesses. If we demanded perfect friends, we would have no friends at all.

The real question is: What direction is the friendship taking you?

Does your friend encourage you towards goodness or constantly pull you towards harmful behaviour? When you remind her of Allah, does she respect you? When she makes a mistake, does she encourage you to join her in it, or is she willing to improve?

A good friend may struggle, but she does not want to drag you into her struggles.

Likewise, if you care about your friend, you should be a source of goodness for her. Perhaps you can be the musk seller in someone else's life.

Maybe Allah has placed you in her life so that your kindness, patience, and good example can help her.

The goal is not to abandon everyone who struggles. The goal is to recognise whether you are positively influencing them or whether they are consistently dragging you away from what you know is right.

Choose the Fragrance You Want to Carry

The hadith of the musk seller and the blacksmith teaches us a lesson that we can carry throughout our lives: the people around us will affect us.

Good company may leave us with knowledge, encouragement, beautiful character, and a stronger relationship with Allah. Even when we do not immediately notice it, the goodness of righteous people can slowly become part of us—just as the beautiful fragrance of musk can remain on someone who spends time near its seller.

Bad company, on the other hand, can harm us in ways we may not expect. Sometimes the damage is obvious, like a burn. At other times, it is subtle, like a bad smell that slowly clings to our clothes.

So choose your company carefully.

Choose friends whose presence feels like musk, Choose people who leave goodness behind.

And most importantly, strive to become that kind of person yourself.

Be the friend whose words bring comfort.

Be the friend whose presence feels safe.

Be the friend who protects secrets.

Be the friend who celebrates others.

Be the friend who gently reminds others of Allah.

Be the friend whose “fragrance” remains even after she leaves the room.

Because one day, the people you spend time with shape the person you become.

May Allah bless us with righteous friends, protect us from harmful influences, and make us a source of goodness for everyone around us. Ameen.
