My Journey as a GIO Coordinator: Guiding Young Minds, Shaping the Future

Among the many responsibilities and roles I have carried over the years, the one closest to my heart is my journey as a GIO Coordinator. There are many reasons behind this deep sense of attachment, but above all, I strongly feel that this is one of the most crucial phases in a person’s lifetime—the phase of youth.

Youth is a time filled with questions, confusion, and curiosity. It is a stage where young minds desperately need proper guidance, sincere advice, and meaningful direction. Unfortunately, this guidance is not easily available. Many young girls hesitate to approach their parents or teachers, either out of fear, hesitation, or the feeling that they may not be understood. Naturally, they turn towards friends—but friends themselves are often inexperienced, equally confused, and unaware of the right path. As a result, confusion deepens instead of clarity emerging.

It was this reality that made me realise the importance of structured, value-based guidance. I firmly believe that if youth are guided in the right way, they can grow into remarkable individuals—individuals like Fatimah (RA), Ayesha (RA), Ummu Ammara (RA), and Maryam (AS). These women were not only strong in faith but also shining examples of courage, wisdom, and leadership. In today’s world, young girls can become the same beacons of light in society.

With strong moral grounding, clarity of purpose, and knowledge drawn from the Qur’an and Sunnah, these young women can not only lead fulfilling personal lives but also contribute to reforming and reconstructing society. They can become role models, leaders, and agents of positive change.

My journey as a GIO Coordinator began in 2011, and today it has been almost 15 years of continuous learning, teaching, and transformation. Over these years, I have witnessed many stories of change. I have seen young girls grow in confidence, character, and clarity. I have also seen worried mothers transform into relieved and grateful parents as they observed positive changes in their daughters’ behaviour, values, and outlook on life after attending GIO classes.

What gives me immense satisfaction is that my connection with GIO has never ended. Even today, I remain closely connected with many of the girls who were once part of these sessions. Seeing their growth, achievements, and commitment to values fills my heart with gratitude and pride.

I say this with humility and joy: I am proud to be a GIO Coordinator. This journey has not only shaped the lives of many young girls but has also deeply enriched my own life. Guiding youth is not just a responsibility—it is a trust, a mission, and a lifelong commitment. GIO prepares young women to live with direction and serve with sincerity.

And that is why every young Muslim woman should join GIO. #HearfromOurLeaders Author: Rabia Basri Saheba, GIO Chennai Metro, City Co-ordinator. Date: 21 February 2026
