A Gift from Allah

Updated: Aug 26

Close your eyes for a moment and think of her. The sister whose name lights up your phone and instantly makes you smile. The one who knows your voice is off before you've said a word. The one who makes du'a for you when you're not even in the room.

Now ask yourself: did you earn her? Did you build that bond with your own two hands?

You didn't. Allah gave her to you.

A Favour, Not an Achievement

We like to think we're good at making friends. We compliment ourselves on our taste in people. But the Qur'an tells a different story one that should humble every single one of us.

"And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided... And He brought your hearts together, so you became, by His favour, brothers."

~ Surah Ala-Imran (3:103)

Read that phrase again slowly: by His favour. Not by your charisma. Not by coincidence. Not because some app matched you on a group chat. Allah Himself reached into two separate hearts, planted love in both, and let them find each other. That is not friendship. That is a miracle dressed up in ordinary clothes.

And He reminds us again:

"The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers."

~ Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10)

One word. Brothers. Not acquaintances, not contacts, not "mutuals." A tie stronger than blood, forged in the workshop of Iman.

The Body That Feels Her Pain

Here is where it gets breathtaking….

The Prophet ﷺ didn't just tell us to love our sisters he told us how deeply that love should run..

"The believers, in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion for each other, are like one body. When one part of the body suffers, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever."

~Sahih al-Bukhari 6011, Sahih Muslim 2586

Think about that. When your finger is cut, you don't calmly observe it from a distance. Your whole body flinches. Your whole body cares. That is what your friend’s pain is meant to do to you and yours to her. Not politeness. Not sympathy from afar. A shared nervous system of the heart.

And the standard. The Prophet ﷺ set is almost impossibly high, and yet so beautifully simple:

"None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself."

~ Sahih al-Bukhari 13, Sahih Muslim 45

Not some of what you love for yourself. All of it. Her success is not a threat to yours. Her joy does not need to be smaller than yours to feel comfortable. This is the quiet revolution of sisterhood in Islam: no competition, only companionship.

The Musk Seller

Every sister who has sat beside someone truly righteous knows this hadith in her bones, even before she's read it:

"The example of a good companion and a bad companion is that of a seller of musk and a blacksmith. The seller of musk will either give you some, or you will buy some from him, or you will enjoy a pleasant smell from him. As for the blacksmith, he will either burn your clothes, or you will breathe a foul smell."

~Sahih al-Bukhari 5534, Sahih Muslim 2628

You know the feeling. You leave her company and something in you feels lighter, cleaner, closer to Allah as though you'd walked straight through a cloud of musk. She didn't have to lecture you. She didn't have to correct you. Her presence alone left its fragrance on your soul.

That is not a small thing. That is a mercy Allah sends wrapped in human form.

Shaded on the Day of No Shadow

Now picture the Day when the sun is brought so close that people drown in their own sweat. Every excuse has dissolved. Every friendship built on convenience has evaporated. And yet:

"There are seven whom Allah will shade on a day when there is no shade but His... two who love each other, meet each other, and depart from each other for the sake of Allah..."

~Sahih al-Bukhari 660, Sahih Muslim 1031

Of everything that could have earned a place under Allah's shade that day wealth, status, beauty, power He chose to honor sisterhood for His sake among them. The friend you made du'a with. The one you sat beside in the masjid. The one whose secrets you kept and whose faults you covered. That bond will still be standing when everything else has burned away.

And on that same Day, Allah Himself will call out:

"Where are those who loved each other for the sake of My glory? Today I will shelter them in My shade, on a day when there is no shade but Mine."

~Sahih Muslim 2566

Then comes a promise so tender it should bring tears:

"Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said: My love is assured for those who love one another for My sake, who sit together for My sake, who visit one another for My sake, and who give to one another for My sake."

~Sahih Muslim 2567

Read it once more. My love is assured. Allah does not simply allow sisterly love He binds Himself to reward it. What greater honor could there be for something as ordinary as a phone call to check on her heart?

Not Luck. A Gift.

So the next time you catch yourself saying, "Alhamdulillah, I'm so lucky to have her" pause. Luck had nothing to do with it.

Allah looked at your heart. He looked at hers. And out of everyone on this vast earth, He joined the two of you together  for a reason only He fully knows, and a purpose that reaches all the way to Jannah.

She is not a coincidence of timing, geography, or shared interests.

She is a Gift…. From Allah

So hold her gently. Forgive her quickly. Make du'a for her in her absence, the way she probably does for you. And ask Allah to let this bond He gifted you in dunya be renewed for you both, forever, in the shade of His Jannah.
